ECO-BOMA : A CLIMATE-RESILIENT MODEL FOR MAASAI STEPPE PASTORALISTS

The project, funded by European Union and launched in partnership with Arusha District Council, Meru District Council and Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), aims at increasing capacity of local communities to adapt to the adverse effects of CC and contextually to contribute to poverty reduction in rural areas. We are working to protect and improve access to ecosystem services, to develop the economic structure of the pastoral communities and to spread the knowledge of solutions which local government should adopt in the face of CC. Our strategy concerns the creation of the Eco-boma model, a low cost, easily replicable model. It reflects an integrated approach to sustainable management of ecosystem services in water, land, energy and housing sectors. The Eco-boma model will improve livelihoods and resilience of Maasai communities thanks to improved practices in agriculture, rangeland management, housing and access to drinkable water resulting in a consequent reduction of conflicts among local communities over natural resources.
